Blissful Ordinariness

As occupational therapists, we pride ourselves in finding meaning and joy in every day life. We believe that the things that we do every day shape who we are and empower us in ways that are sometimes overlooked or taken for granted. I think that "blissful ordinariness" are the things we do every day that may seem insignificant, but are important to how we function in our daily lives. These are small tasks that we do that make up our daily lives, such as enjoying a meal, engaging in hobbies, personal care, and social engagements. These things may seem ordinary to us at the time, but they are the things that make up our lives and take up our time every single day. As occupational therapists, we have a better understanding of how hard it can be when we encounter challenges that alter our daily lives. Being able to understand "blissful ordinariness" changes the way we interact and understand our clients and their barriers. I feel like this also creates a better relationship with the client because we are treating them so they improve in their every day life, instead of just treating the one or more challenges they are facing at the time of therapy. I think "blissful ordinariness" is a wonderful way to describe how people occupy their time, and it is an important part of how we as occupational therapists use a holistic approach to therapy.
